Drake Maye’s developed skill set could fuel an Opoy campaign this season

When examining the Patriots' roster and its potential, Drake Maye certainly stands out above most of his teammates. The team's second-year quarterback, who was a Pro Bowler as a rookie and showed superstar flashes even though the talent around him was bare-bones at best, is poised to take more steps forward in 2025.

Could that include being a candidate for Offensive Player of the Year? Pro Football Network seems to believe so, as they named Maye to be the Patriots' best candidate to win the award, with Stefon Diggs a close second.

It could be asking too much of Maye to win the award, especially with several established offensive players in the AFC, but he has the talent and determination to be in the conversation.

What will it take for Drake Maye to be among Offensive Player of the Year threats?

One big aspect of Maye's game that we saw last year was his ability to run. On occasion, it didn't happen by design as the Patriots had one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL, an area they rightfully addressed through the draft and free agency.

But if Maye isn't running for his life in 2025 - and he shouldn't be with an upgraded offensive line - his numbers will certainly improve.

It will take a herculean effort for Maye to win Offensive Player of the Year. There are simply too many talented veterans in the way, and Maye has a lot of growing to do. But aside from running when called upon to do so, the other factor that could be in his favor is the guys around him, and using them.

The Patriots will not ask Maye to do too much, nor will you see him throw the ball 40-50 times a game. That's too much burden for a second-year quarterback, especially one learning a new offense. But if Maye can get the ball in the hands of his playmakers, not turn it over, and occasionally stretch the field, we can certainly put him in the conversation.

At some point in his career, Maye will win this award. It probably won't happen in 2025, but he can put the league on notice.
