Man Utd don’t just need to address the forward line, they also need to plug a gap in midfield with competition hotting up for one target.

Good players will always be in demand and Manchester United are finding out the hard way that good players who are available for a cut-price fee are even harder to sign.

Man Utd face uphill battle to sign Wilfred Ndidi

Slightly cheaper, but more experienced, is Wilfred Ndidi at Leicester City with the Nigeria great seeing a queue of clubs lining up for his signature now. The 28-year old also has a release clause in his current contract of just £9m, which is still a bargain. Everton and United were first linked but now more clubs are in the race.

According to Italian outlet TuttuSport, the easily affordable fee is generating a lot of interest from the Premier League and beyond:

“The 303 games played with the Foxes earned him great consideration especially across the Channel, to the point that many clubs - in recent days - have moved to inquire about his contractual situation: from Everton to Crystal Palace , from Fulham to Manchester United , who had already thought of him a summer ago, when his contract with his current club expired before renewing in July with the current three-year contract.

“The one with the clause, to be clear. But (Real) Betis and the ‘usual’ Al Ahli have also moved on his trail in recent days . In addition, of course, to Juventus . Which can boast a very respectable reputation, a good willingness to accommodate the requests of the entourage and, above all, participation in the next Champions League .”

Who would miss out if United sign Ndidi?

If United sign Ndidi, he starts. It is as simple as that. Amorim needs a player who can hold the midfield together and who can organise those around him.

Ndidi isn’t just a good player in his own right, he makes those around him better too with his leadership skills and ability to read the game.

Manuel Ugarte might see his game time reduced, but what he should also do is improve as a player and learn from someone who has performed consistently at the highest level.

The problem that United have, is that Juventus’ status as a Champions League team might be too much for Ndidi to ignore given his age. He might get more money elsewhere, however, the chance to play in the Champions League might be too much to turn down.

Failing to beat Spurs in the Europa League final could well dictate the quality of squad that Amorim has when the transfer window shuts.
