Shocking stat proves Ineos are targeting the opposite of what Ruben Amorim asked for

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been floated around as a potential Manchester United target this summer.

It is no secret that Manchester United are in the market for a striker this summer, and it is also no secret that it is not going particularly well so far.

The Red Devils have already missed out on Liam Delap, while Ruben Amorim favourite Viktor Gyokeres is close to joining Arsenal.

With two top targets already out of the picture, United are quickly running out of options while Ineos are busy bickering over the price of Bryan Mbeumo.

Earlier this week, Dominic Calvert-Lewin was linked to United, but a glance at his recent record will worry fans.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is underperforming in front of goal

Ruben Amorim grew concerned at the lack of goals being scored last season, which explains why United have started this summer looking to add more firepower to the squad.

With Matheus Cunha already signed and talks ongoing for Mbeumo, both players should add a significant threat, but a central striker is still needed as the centrepiece to a new-look attack.

However, one statistic pointed out by WhoScored shows why Calvert-Lewin cannot be the final puzzle piece for United’s attack this summer.

Calvert-Lewin topped the Premier League last season as the biggest underperformer of his expected goals (xG) tally. He only scored three goals for Everton despite being expected to score 8.67 from the chances presented to him.

It is no one-off either. In 2023/24, Calvert-Lewin also struggled in front of goal with an xG underperformance of -6.73.

Ruben Amorim wants a ‘clinical’ striker at Man United

Last season, Amorim saw his side throw away countless points because of missed chances despite the Portuguese coach creating a game-plan good enough to win the game.

Ahead of the Europa League final, Amorim urged United to be “clinical” with their chances if they wanted to bring the trophy back to Manchester.

“We have to be clinical in that game,” is what Amorim said ahead of that final. But once again, he was let down by his players who had 16 shots to Tottenham’s three.

The priority this summer has to be signing a striker who is ruthless in front of goal, and Calvert-Lewin has proven he is anything but.
