Anthony Davis has had more than his fair share of injury issues. After being traded to the Dallas Mavericks last season, he missed quite a bit of time due to an adductor strain injury. However, there was another injury he was dealing with as well.
This offseason, Davis underwent surgery to repair a detached retina, an injury no one was aware of before now.
His injury update was originally reported by ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania.
"Dallas Mavericks All-Star Anthony Davis underwent a procedure to repair a detached retina that he suffered during the season, sources tell ESPN," Charania wrote on X. "Davis played through multiple hits to the face last year. He is expected to be healthy for next training camp."
Of course, the Mavericks acquired Davis in the trade that sent superstar Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. He is a championship caliber player himself, but injury issues have been a major concern about him.
After being traded to Dallas, Davis played in nine games. He averaged 20 points per game to go along with 10.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 2.2 blocks.
Throughout the entire 2024-25 NBA season split between the Mavericks and Lakers, he averaged 24.7 points, 11.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.2 blocks, and 1.2 steals per game, while shooting 51.6 percent from the floor and 28.2 percent from the three-point line.
Nico Harrison made it clear that he believes acquiring Davis will help Dallas compete for a championship. The Mavericks did received a major stroke of luck by winning the NBA Draft Lottery and drafting Cooper Flagg at No. 1 overall.
In order to compete for a championship, however, Dallas will need Davis to get healthy and stay that way.
Fans did not hesitate to jump into the comment section of Charania's report about Davis' detached retina.
"'Detached retina' is absurd lol glad he'll be healthy for camp tho," one fan wrote.
A second fan chimed in, "Been saying AD gotta wear the Kareem goggles for years."
"My heart dropped at first lol. Glad AD is healthy," a third comment read.
Another comment said, "Hoping for a speedy recover for AD."
Hopefully, Davis is good to go for the start of the 2025-26 season. Assuming that does end up being the case, the hope will then turn to Davis being able to stay healthy for the entirety of the year.
