Buccaneers' Todd Bowles Climbs in NFL Head Coach Rankings

Todd Bowles has been criticized for many things since taking over the head coaching job for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following the "stepping down" of Bruce Arians after the 2021 season.

But one thing he has not been criticized for is winning. His 27-24 record doesn't jump off the page, but he was responsible for the transition from Tom Brady to Baker Mayfield and ensured a smooth operation afterward.

Bowles was named the 14th-best head coach in the NFL per Sharp Football Analysis.

"Todd Bowles has been solid during his three-year run with the Buccaneers, making the playoffs in each of those seasons," SFA wrote. "He jumps to 14th in this year’s rankings after finishing 20th a year ago. "

The ranking seems surprising based on Bowles' defense's performance last season. As the defensive coordinator, he's responsible for the performance of the unit.

The head coaching rankings must be based simply on the team's overall performance, and there's no doubt the offense carried the team last year.

In Bowles' three seasons as coach in Tampa Bay, he's finished 8-9, 9-8 and 10-7. The last two seasons were more impressive as the team dealt with injuries to key personnel.

Most importantly, the Glazer family is happy with Bowles' performance as indicated by the contract extension he received with general manager Jason Licht.

"I am excited to continue working with Jason for years to come as we build on the success we've enjoyed and keep reaching for even bigger and better goals," Bowles said in a statement. "... I also appreciate the confidence that the Glazer Family has shown in my abilities to lead this football team. It is a responsibility I do not take lightly and am honored to have."
