Former Philadelphia 76ers No. 3 overall pick Jahlil Okafor has signed a new contract for the upcoming season. Unfortunately for him, it is not with an NBA team.
Okafor has agreed to terms with Levanga Hokkaido -- a team out of Japan -- it was announced this week.
The news comes after he spent last year playing for the Indiana Mad Ants in the G League.
Jahlil Okafor put up solid stats for the Mad Ants, averaging 17.9 points and 9.4 rebounds per game, while shooting 66.6 percent from the field. The former Duke star was even called up to play for the Pacers in a game.
However, he is now heading back overseas to continue his professional basketball career. It will be interesting to see if the 29-year-old ever gets another shot in the NBA.
Okafor was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft after winning a national championship and earning All-American honors at Duke.
He had a strong rookie season, averaging 17.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, while being named NBA All-Rookie First Team. But from there, his numbers started to drop.
Okafor averaged 11.8 points during his second year in the league, before being traded to the Brooklyn Nets during Year 3. He went on to spend time with the Pelicans and Pistons, but didn’t average double digits with either, before playing overseas from 2022-2024.
After spending a year in the G League and a game with the Pacers last season, Okafor is now heading back overseas where he will look to be a difference maker for Levanga Hokkaido in Japan.
