Brad Stevens reveals plan for Boston Celtics roster after free agency

BOSTON -- Trade rumors continue to swirl around the Boston Celtics amid an offseason of retooling but Brad Stevens sent signals on Tuesday that more moves aren’t necessarily imminent for this Boston roster.

The Celtics made a host of deals official on Monday, including the trades of Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday for Georges Niang and Anfernee Simons respectively. Boston’s free agent signings of Luka Garza and Josh Minott brought Boston’s current roster situation to 15 players and Boston’s president of basketball operations hinted that no more moves are imminent for the time being with Las Vegas Summer League on the horizon.

“There’ll probably be some conversations that all the teams, all 30 teams have in Vegas, but it’s a lot less than around the draft and a lot less than even around as the moratorium comes to a close,” Stevens said Tuesday at the Auerbach Center. “I’d say that who knows what will happen, but as far as us, we’re very comfortable with this group heading into next season.”

The Celtics currently sit well into the luxury tax with their revamped roster, but Stevens indicated that cutting costs would not necessarily be the main factor in any additional moves this offseason.

“We have most of our first round picks still other than the 2029 one,” Stevens said. “We have a lot of second (round picks) now so we have some flexibility there and we don’t want to take away our chance to use those to become the best that we can be over the next few years just to make a move to help save money. I think that that’s been very clearly stated to me.

“We’ll continue to look at how we can make things a little bit better or tweak things around the edges and maybe something comes up in the next couple weeks, but that’s been our mindset.”

Boston’s current depth chart has plenty of talent at the top even with Jayson Tatum sidelined. However, a lack of depth is evident in the frontcourt with the departures of Porzingis, Horford and Kornet.

Guards (4): White, Pritchard, Simons, Davison (non-guaranteed)

Forwards (8): Brown, Hauser, Niang, Scheuermann, Walsh (non-guaranteed), Minott, Gonzalez, Tatum (injured)

Bigs (3): Queta, Tillman, Garza

Two-ways (3): Miles Norris, Max Shulga, Amari Williams

The Celtics do still have some flexibility to make tweaks with a pair of non-guaranteed contracts (Davison, Walsh) but more significant trimming to the roster would be needed to dip under the luxury tax.
