Steelers’ Jalen Ramsey Draws Inspiration From Charles Woodson, Eyeing Versatile Role With New…

It’s been a busy offseason for the Pittsburgh Steelers front office.

The team attacked free agency, the draft, and the trade market with a full head of steam. Most notably, they signed Aaron Rodgers, drafted Kaleb Johnson, and traded for DK Metcalf and Jalen Ramsey.

Pittsburgh hasn’t won a playoff game since January 2017; however, it’s consistently made the postseason since then. Heading into 2025, the team seems to be in a position to fight for the AFC North title at the very least.

Although the Steelers lost Minkah Fitzpatrick in the deal, acquiring Ramsey is a massive asset for the secondary moving forward. With cornerbacks Joey Porter Jr. and Darius Slay Jr. already on the roster, Ramsey’s versatility is going to be vital.

He’s an excellent man-to-man coverage player who brings a unique physicality that most corners don’t possess. Ramsey’s ball skills are elite, which might call for him to play other positions like safety if needed.

Throughout his career, Ramsey has expressed interest in playing different positions, taking inspiration from NFL legend Charles Woodson.

“Me personally, my style is like Charles [Woodson],” Ramsey said on the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast in 2021.

“I saw Charles as the best defensive back to play the game. Because he played multiple positions in the secondary. He played corner; he played safety; he played nickel,” Ramsey said. “He did a bunch of different stuff, and he affected the game in so many different ways.”

He was drafted fifth overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016, where he primarily played on the outside. But when he arrived at the Los Angeles Rams, he welcomed a change.

“That’s kind of the role that I started to be in a little bit,” Ramsey said. “Here and there, they’re starting to let me be me a little bit more, mixing in a little bit of nickel.”

“And then at some point in my career, if it takes me there to safety, I want to do that as well. But I want to have a mix of all that.”
