Brock Purdy and Trent Williams
Brock Purdy and Trent Williams celebrate a touchdown during the fourth quarter of the 49ers game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at EverBank Stadium on November 12, 2023.
So many NFL coaches and talent evaluators completely failed to see the superstar potential in San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.
Purdy fell all the way to the very last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, and yet, he is the best performing quarterback of the 2022 draft class and arguably the 49ers best quarterback of the last two decades.
Most people only realized Purdy’s true talent after he broke out during the 2022 season. But one of his teammates was excited about his true potential even more than Purdy himself: 49ers linebacker Fred Warner.
On the Bussin’ With the Boys podcast, hosted by former NFL star offensive linemen Taylor Lewan and Will Compton, Purdy shared a story about overhearing Warner’s excitement for him before Purdy’s NFL preseason debut.
Brock Purdy talks about when players started to notice that he could actually play during his rookie year:
“Before the first preseason game, we’re at practice ends and we come in and I could see Fred talking to Trent. For some reason I saw them talking and I saw Fred say 'I… pic.twitter.com/y9FiGRdb47

“Before the first preseason game, we’re at practice, practice ends and I could see Fred talking to [Trent Williams]…I saw Fred say ‘I can’t wait to watch this Purdy kid in the preseason game tomorrow against the Packers,’” Purdy said.
That comment was a huge boost for Purdy’s confidence since he really didn’t know where he stood with the 49ers organization at that point.
“At that point, my head’s just been down, I’m just trying to do good at practice and all that,” Purdy said. “But I was like alright, they are noticing.”
Purdy only had 3 completions for 36 yards in that game, but he did complete a 5-yard touchdown to TE Tanner Hudson. Obviously, his career took off from there.
Purdy Also Said Kyle Shanahan Made Him Think the 49ers Were Releasing Him
In another portion of the Bussin’ with the Boys podcast episode, Purdy shared a funny story about Head Coach Kyle Shanahan, who apparently made Purdy think the 49ers were cutting him before his career even started.
Brock Purdy thought he was getting cut his rookie year:
“We’re in the quarterback room and then Kyle opened up the door and goes 'Hey Brock can you grab your stuff and come talk to me' I was like am I getting cut? and he goes 'Na I’m kidding set your stuff down, congrats Bro'… pic.twitter.com/cDINAd3bL2

“They were starting to make cuts and call guys into Kyle’s office, and so we’re in the quarterback room and then Kyle opened up the door and he goes ‘Hey Brock, can you grab you stuff and come talk to me,’” Purdy said. “I was like, am I getting cut?”
“And then he goes, ‘Nah I’m kidding, set your stuff down, congrats bro,’ and he dapped me up.”
Purdy was in a competition with Trey Lance, Nate Sudfield and Jimmy Garoppolo that season. Ultimately he beat Sudfield to make the roster, both Lance and Garoppolo injured themselves during the season, and Purdy became the starter.
He won all six of his regular season starts that first 2022 season and two playoff games.
How Far Would Purdy Go To Win A Super Bowl?
The final segment on “Bussin’ with the Boys” that made 49ers fans smile was a segment where Purdy shared how far he would go to win a Super Bowl.
Purdy said he would go to jail for a year and cut off one of the fingers on his left hand if it meant someone would guarantee him a Super Bowl win in 2025.
Brock Purdy was asked would he rather win one Super Bowl in his career with the 49ers or win three with the Seahawks:
“I’m going Niners, Bro… Bang Bang all the way.”
Brock also said he would go to jail for a year if it meant winning a Super Bowl

Purdy also showed off his 49ers spirit, asserting he’d rather win one Super Bowl in his career with the 49ers than three with the Seattle Seahawks.
“Bang Bang all the way,” Purdy declared.
With TE George Kittle already having appeared on the podcast, 49ers fans have now been treated to two entertaining appearances on the “Bussin with the Boys” podcast from two of their biggest stars.
But which 49ers player would you like to see on the podcast next, 49ers fans?
My pick is Trent Williams – hearing o-line talk from three great offensive linemen would be incredibly entertaining and insightful.
