Man United are unlikely to pursue a move to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin despite his availability on a free transfer, according to their former chief scout.
Mick Brown, who worked at Old Trafford for over a decade during the club’s most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that the 28-year-old is not among their leading targets for the position.
However, Ruben Amorim is now “desperate” to add a new striker to his squad after missing out on Viktor Gyokeres while other key targets are now considered unlikely.
This comes after Football Insider revealed Aston Villa will turn down bids for Ollie Watkins after United set their sights on signing the England international.
Calvert-Lewin left Everton upon the expiry of his contract on 30 June and has been linked with moves to a number of Premier League clubs including Newcastle and West Ham.
However, concerns surrounding his recent injury issues and inconsistent goalscoring record mean clubs are unsure about pursuing a move, and United share those concerns.

Man United make Calvert-Lewin decision after Newcastle claim
Brown told Football Insider in April that Newcastle have had second thoughts about Calvert-Lewin despite having a long-held interest in the striker.
The former scout, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, has insisted that United will pursue other targets and he would be “stunned” if they signed Calvert-Lewin.
“*No, I don’t expect United to go for Calvert-Lewin,*” he told Football Insider.
“As far as I’m concerned, it’s a non-starter and I would be stunned if he was the one they went for.
“Calvert-Lewin is not the answer to Ruben Amorim’s issues.
“He’s a striker who’s hardly scored a goal in recent seasons and spends more time on the treatment table than he does on the pitch.
“I haven’t got anything against him, I wish him well, but that is not what Manchester United need.
“But they seem to be getting desperate because they’ve missed out on the ones they really want.
“Gyokeres was the top target but he looks as if he’s going to Arsenal, Watkins doesn’t look like it’ll happen, Mateta is unlikely...
“They’ve really struggled in that department, but Calvert-Lewin isn’t the answer.”

Marcus Rashford update emerges at Old Trafford
While talk continues to surround incoming deals at Old Trafford, there is also a focus on outgoing players amid speculation about Marcus Rashford’s future.
Brown told Football Insider that Rashford is edging closer to leaving Man United and is increasingly likely to join Barcelona on a season-long loan deal.
This comes after Ruben Amorim gave the winger extra time off, until the end of this month, to secure himself a move, having been due to return for pre-season this week.
Football Insider revealed on 6 July that Amorim wants to fast-track Rashford’s exit as he originally planned for the deal to be completed before pre-season.
