Prenuptial agreements can be important for couples who share a large amount of assets, and that's certainly true for top-level professional athletes.

The wife of one of the NFL's best quarterbacks is revealing her thoughts on the agreement she signed with her husband, and her reaction may be surprising.

During an episode of her podcast "The Morning After," Kelly Stafford - wife of Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew - explained her contract with her husband.

"Honestly, it was, and it doesn't even matter, it was very fair. He was obviously very generous in it all," she said.

"But I think sometimes when you think prenups, it's a negative connotation when you're talking about marriage. And turns out, I agree with you, letting you and your significant other decide the terms if a divorce does happen. I don't think anyone thinks about it, the state has control and they do. At the end of the day, the government controls that contract. So, to make your own seems way smarter."

Before agreeing to the prenup, Stafford admitted that she was "young and very naive" about the entire process, and says she even thought signing one was "planning our divorce before getting married."

"But then again I had to look at the other direction and say, ‘Well, if we never get divorced, we'll never need it anyway,' she said, changing her mind.

"So why wouldn't I?"

The agreement has worked out for the couple, who have been married since 2015.

That was six years after Matthew was drafted No. 1 overall out of the University of Georgia by the Detroit Lions. He signed a six-year, $72 million contract as a rookie, and then agreed to a $53 million three-year extension in 2013.

Stafford would play for the Lions until he was traded to the Rams ahead of the 2021 season. He had the best year of his career in Los Angeles that year, winning the Super Bowl at the team's home stadium to cap off a storybook season.

Stafford is at the tail end of his career, but he's had success on the field and at the bank: $364 million in career earnings is one heck of a way to spend your career.
