Mavericks All-Star undergoes surgery for detached retina: Report

Dallas Mavericks All-Star forward Anthony Davis underwent a procedure to repair a detached retina that he suffered last season, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Davis, 32, is expected to be healthy for training camp, which typically begins in late September. It will mark Davis’ first training camp with the Mavs since being traded last season from the Los Angeles Lakers to Dallas in a blockbuster deal for Luka Doncic.

Davis played in just nine games for the Mavs last season while battling a groin injury that sidelined him for six weeks in February and March. He averaged 24.7 points, 11.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.2 blocks in 51 games for the Lakers and Mavericks last season.

Davis, a 10-time NBA All-Star, suffered an eye injury while playing for the Lakers against the Toronto Raptors in November 2024. He was inadvertently poked in the eye by Raptors center Jakob Poeltl while attempting a block during the third quarter and was ruled out the rest of the game with an eye injury. He returned to action in the Lakers’ next game against the Memphis Grizzlies three days later.

“A couple of scratches in my eye,” Davis said at the time. “As far as the medical term and all that, I’m not 100% sure, but I’m cleared to play.”

At the time, Davis rejected the idea of wearing protective goggles after suffering a number of eye injuries over the years. He previously suffered a corneal abrasion in the same eye in March 2024.

“I don’t want to, and the doctor said I didn’t have to,” he said. “Now if it gets to a point where doctor orders are to (wear goggles), then of course I will.”

The retina is a light-sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye that converts light into electrical signals, which are then sent to the brain to create vision.

Retinal detachment happens when the thin layer of tissue at the back of the eye, called the retina, pulls away from its regular position, according to cleveland.com health reporter Julie Washington. When the retina is detached, it is separated from the blood vessels that provides oxygen and nourishment to the eye. There is a risk of permanent vision loss in the affected eye if left untreated, health experts said.
