Man Utd flop Alexis Sanchez linked with Jose Mourinho reunion, seven years after infamous transfer

Fenerbahce are working on a deal for former Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez.

There is a long list of players who have tried and failed at Manchester United since Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement 12 years ago.

Few failed as spectacularly as Alexis Sanchez, who arrived at Old Trafford in 2018 with plenty of promise after proving himself as Arsenal’s talisman.

Ultimately, the 36-year-old flopped at United after arriving in a swap deal with Henrikh Mkhitaryan going in the opposite direction.

After leaving United in 2020, Sanchez went on to play for Inter Milan, Marseille and Udinese.

Sanchez is showing no signs that he is ready to retire, and there is even speculation that he could be on the move again this summer.

Jose Mourinho eyes second Alexis Sanchez swoop

Jose Mourinho was United’s manager when Sanchez joined the club in 2018.

Even though Sanchez failed to impress during his time with the Red Devils, Mourinho still believed the experienced Chilean has something to offer amid reports he wants to sign him again.

According to Italian outlet Gazzetta, Sanchez’s second spell with Inter Milan could be coming to an end due to claims Fenerbahce have offered the player a one-year contract worth €4m (£3.5 million).

The deal would involve the automatic option of a second year for Sanchez, granted that either of two criteria is reached. That would reportedly involve featuring in 70% of the minutes Fenerbahce play next season or contributing a cumulative 15 goals or assists.

Only time will tell if Sanchez will join Mourinho’s Fenerbahce which came second in the Turkish Super Lig for the fourth season in a row last term. They are looking for their first league title in 11 years.

Fenerbahce have already signed former United loanee Sofyan Amrabat this summer.

Sanchez stats for Udinese last season

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Sanchez could be on the move this summer.

Considering he made just 13 appearances last term, perhaps the only surprise is that he is not hanging up his boots and could remain in Europe.

Sanchez failed to register a goal or assist throughout the 2024/25 season.

Mourinho must think Sanchez will have a better chance of having an impact in the Turkish league.
