Everton could look to strengthen their midfield this summer as they aim to continue their squad rebuild, and a previous target could be available.

Abdoulaye Doucoure was part of a long list of departures as the Toffees parted ways with a number of experienced players at the end of their contracts.

Everton are beginning to get their summer transfer business underway, with Thierno Barry set to arrive as the first high-profile attacking addition this summer.

David Moyes could add more quality to his options in the middle of the park, but The Friedkin Group could actually prevent him signing a previous Everton target.

Roma and Inter make contact over Richard Rios

Everton were linked with Palmeiras star Richard Rios in the January transfer window, and the highly rated midfielder would certainly add a lot of quality to the squad.

The Colombian international has attracted a lot of attention as a result of his performances for the Brazilian side, and also featured at the Club World Cup this summer.

Rios has excelled for Palmeiras

Despite Everton’s interest, Fabrizio Romano has now reported that Serie A giants Roma and Inter have made contact with Palmeiras over Rios, who could be available for £25 million this summer.

Roma are also owned by TFG, and it now appears that the Everton owners would rather see the 25-year-old move to Italy than Merseyside.

Rios would be a fantastic signing for Everton

If Rios is available for £25m, then Everton must do all they can to sign him despite Roma’s interest, given what he would bring to the midfield.

The 25-year-old adds both physical and technical quality, and is comfortable going forward and in defensive situations.

The Colombia star could be the ideal replacement for Doucoure, and would also arrive as a long-term option with a lot of resale value.

While a deal does look unlikely, TFG are clearly aware of the player, and Moyes may hope for them to consider bringing the player to the Hill Dickinson Stadium instead of Roma.

Everton are currently light in midfield, but have been boosted by Idrissa Gana Gueye signing an extension to remain at the club for one more year.
