Former Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been linked with a Newcastle United transfer, after the exit of Callum Wilson.

It’s been a bit of a ‘will he’ or won’t he’ saga for years at Newcastle United. We know Eddie Howe is a massive fan of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, has been for a long while, but he’s never been able to afford the player, with Everton asking for a big fee.

But this summer, that’s all changed. DCL, as he’s often known, is a free transfer, having failed to agree a new deal with the Toffees - and the former England international is on the hunt for a new club and new terms.

NUFC transfers: are Newcastle interested in Calvert-Lewin?

NewcastleWorld asked about NUFC’s interest earlier in the summer and were hit with a swift ‘not interested’.

But talks in the media this week has seen DCL’s name come right back to the forefront of the Magpies’ thinking, due in no small part to the exit of Callum Wilson from St James’ Park. The 49-goal frontman leaves United after rejecting a pay-as-you-play deal on Tyneside, and is said to be interesting a whole host of clubs in the Premier League, including Leeds United and Burnley. Remarkably, he’s also been offered to Manchester United this summer.

Anyway, with the exit of Wilson confirmed, have Newcastle really changed their mind and have eyes for DCL? Only time will tell, I suppose. But one thing is for sure, Eddie Howe has been sent a loud and clear transfer message by fans in relation to the deal.

We asked our NUFC Facebook audience - check out our dedicated page here - the question: “Would Dominic Calvert-Lewin be a suitable replacement for Callum Wilson at Newcastle United?”

And it’s fair to say, we got a LOAD of responses...

What NUFC fans have been saying about DCL to NUFC

Kevin Maughan: "There will certainly be a free space in the treatment room."

Kevin Brown: "Decent when fit, a bit quicker than Wilson and excellent on the treatment table. Sounds a perfect replacement."

Scott Fat-face Thirlaway: "Yeah, he’d keep the physio’s in a job just like Wilson."

Keith Skelton: "No."

John Van Reijn: "Yeah he can use the same bed at the training ground Wilson did."

Mick Maley: "From one treatment table, to another."

Clive Thompson: "One sick note for another."

Ron Kettlewell: "Yes good player will be good second choice and won't cause trouble if he's not playing."

Colin Foster: "NO".

Simon Bennett: "NO!"

Thomas Blacker: "Wilson was great when fit and has moved on but we don't need another crock to take his place on the treatment table. No thanks."

Les Crow: "Replacing one injured player with another."

Lee Galloway: "Yes to keep the medical staff in a job."

Tommy Jackson: "No rather keep Wilson than DCL."

Barrington Brown: "He’d be an exact replacement I’d say 😏."

Mark Blacklock: "Doesn't matter, he's not coming."

Michael Stewart Watson: "Step backwards."

Craig Robinson: "He can score goals he'd be a decent bench warmer, but could do a job if needed, and under Eddie would get him back to his best, if injured we have good back up in Osula, wouldn't be a bad move tbh."

Ross Hellens: "No thanks."

Jeremy Walker: "Yes. He knows he is not first choice. He has played 59 Premier League games in the last two seasons and is only 27. He would be a shrewd signing."

Claire Kay: "No no and no."
