Man United are considering the sale of several players this summer, including a £30m player.
Andre Onana “increasingly likely” to stay at Man United
There have been reports saying that French Ligue 1 side Monaco held an interest in Onana, and they enquired about signing the Cameroon international last month. However, interest from the French side seems to have quietened down in recent weeks.
According to a report by the Daily Mail, United had set a £30m price tag for Onana, but more importantly, they are “increasingly likely” to keep hold of the 29-year-old. Last year, he made 50 appearances, conceding 65 goals, and providing 11 assists. The report includes that Ruben Amorim is ‘happy’ with Onana, despite the mistake-prone season that the keeper had last year.
Onana is reportedly wanting to stay at Man United, and after returning to training at Carrington this week, it looks as though he will stay at Old Trafford for the upcoming season.
The keeper received a lot of criticism last year, especially after his two crucial mistakes in United’s Europa League quarter-final against Lyon, which almost cost the Red Devils their spot in the semi-finals. Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison said last season that Onana is worse than the previous United keeper, David De Gea.
“He’s nowhere near being good enough,” Morrison said on Sky Sports News last season. “He’s not better than David de Gea… shot stopping, David de Gea is a better goalie than Onana.”
Onana’s cryptic Man United future claim
Amid all the reports that were linking Onana to Monaco, and previously with a move to the Saudi Pro League, the 29-year-old himself seemed very uncertain about whether he has a future at Man United or not.
Last month, when asked by reporters about his future at Old Trafford, the goalkeeper was very honest in his assessment, suggesting that there had been no indication of United telling him what his future holds. He was quoted by the Sun simply saying: “Will I leave? I don’t know, we’ll see!”
It does look a lot more likely that Onana will stay at United, unless the Red Devils decide to go after Martinez, who seems to be the most likely replacement, should they move away from Onana. But, the recent update suggests that the club are willing to give Onana another chance heading into the new season.
