Gyokeres says playing setup under Amorim matches him well, even though he is forcing a move to Arsenal.
Gyokeres Still Praises Amorim Despite Arsenal Move
Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres says Ruben Amorim’s style “suits me perfectly”. This comes despite him choosing to push for a transfer to Arsenal instead of Manchester United.
The forward is close to sealing a move to the Emirates during this summer window. There were a dramatic few weeks of negotiations and bold actions on his part in the meantime. The 27-year-old striker was incredible under Amorim at Sporting. In just 68 games, he found the net 66 times and assisted 23 more. He seems to think highly of his old coach.
However, despite that strong partnership, Gyokeres has chosen to back a transfer to Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal. He has a chance to reunite with Amorim, who is now managing Man Utd. As per reports , he even offered to reduce nearly £2m in future wages to help Arsenal’s bid. Reportedly, he pressured Sporting by threatening a strike as well.
Arsenal Closing in on Deal
Transfer talks between Arsenal and Sporting are being held. The Portuguese side is holding firm on their £68.9m asking price. The Gunners have already agreed to personal terms with Gyokeres on a five-year deal. But, the North London side remain about £4.3m short of the full package Sporting expects.
Despite the gap, there’s hope that a deal will be struck soon. Gyokeres has made it clear he will no longer play for Sporting. He is ready to skip pre-season training if needed. Interestingly, even with Amorim no longer in charge, the striker has continued to deliver. He bagged 31 goals and added 12 assists in 34 games since the coach’s exit. The striker has proven that he can thrive no matter the system.
