Anthony Elanga shows his 100m time and top speed in viral video ahead of £55m Newcastle move

Anthony Elanga is closing in on a move to Newcastle United and Eddie Howe will be bringing one of the fastest players in the Premier League to St James' Park.

The Magpies are set to sign Elanga from Nottingham Forest in a £55m deal, and he's on Tyneside to complete a medical ahead of the switch, per Sky Sports' Keith Downie. He was one of the standout performers at the City Ground last season as Nuno Espirito Santo's men managed to pull off unlikely European qualification.

Elanga's pace has long been a problem for defenders in the top flight, including former club Manchester United, whom he fired a fabulous solo goal against in a 1-0 win. His frightening speed is likely one of the main reasons Howe wants him, as shown through his running away on the pitch and the track.

Elanga took to social media to showcase his speed, posting a video of himself taking on a 100-metre sprint. The Swedish winger timed in at a jaw-dropping 10.93 seconds from a standing position, hitting a top speed of 24.7 miles per hour.

You wouldn't want to be in a one-on-one situation with the 23-year-old speedster who'd give Usain Bolt a run for his money. The Jamaican sprinter's world record set in 2009 at the Olympics was only 1.35 faster and that wasn't starting from a standing position.

One fan suggested Elanga's running abilities could have led to a different career path:

"If Elanga's parents went to USA instead of Sweden we'd have a new gold medalist."

The Toon are excited to see the Swede land on Tyneside, with one fan calling him a "freakish" athlete while another deemed him an "excellent ball carrier".

Elanga ran riot on the wing throughout his time at the City Ground, and that was the case last season, bagging six goals and 11 assists in 38 league games. He did so while establishing himself as one of the fastest players in the league.

The former Manchester United academy graduate achieved a top speed of 22.78, placing him among the top five fastest players in the Premier League. Only Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven (23.07) and Manchester City midfielder Matheus Nunes (22.82) were quicker than him, per Opta.

Elanga's goal against the Red Devils saw him run 85 metres in nine seconds, leaving several defenders floored before firing past Andre Onana. It's a sight that Newcastle fans will be hoping to see on a regular occasion come next season.

The Magpies have endured a frustrating summer thus far, missing out on the likes of Manchester United-linked Bryan Mbeumo and new Chelsea striker Joao Pedro. But they are surging ahead in their pursuit of Elanga and he'll be relishing forming a fierce frontline with Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.
