Newcastle United have confirmed the departure of Callum Wilson after five seasons on Tyneside following the expiration of his contract on June 30.
Wilson, who joined from Bournemouth in 2020, made 130 appearances for Newcastle and scored 49 goals. Newcastle chose not to trigger the extension clause in Wilson’s deal and opted against offering a new incentive-based contract.
The 33-year-old shared a farewell message on social media.
“It’s time to say goodbye after an unbelievable few years in the Toon,” Wilson said. “Thank you for everything. We stood strong together through the highs and some lows to help the club experience new heights.
“I am so proud to have worn the iconic number 9 shirt and to have added a little more history to it. Scoring at the Gallowgate end really is as special as they say. All good things come to an end but there’s no doubt Newcastle United will always have a place in mine and my families hearts.”
Wilson’s standout season came in 2022–23, when he netted a career-high 18 Premier League goals. That said, injuries limited his role over the last two years, and this past season, he managed just one goal in 22 appearances across all competitions. His final outing came on the last day of the season, a substitute appearance in a loss to Everton at St James’ Park.
Wilson’s exit leaves Newcastle short of depth behind Alexander Isak. The club, however, is set to complete the transfer for Nott Forest’s Anthony Elanga in the next few days in what will be the first senior-squad arrival of the summer.
