West Ham United Women’s goalkeeper Kinga Szemik featured for Poland in their UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 clash against Sweden on Tuesday evening, delivering a commendable performance despite her team’s 3–0 defeat in Lucerne.
It was a tough evening for the Polish side, who were aiming to keep their tournament hopes alive, but the experience and class of Sweden ultimately proved too much.
Szemik made many saves throughout the match, doing her best to keep Poland in contention. She showed quick reflexes and confidence in her area, while her presence between the posts was commanding.
She provided a steady hand against a relentless Swedish attack led by Stina Blackstenius and Kosovare Asllani.
Despite Szemik’s efforts, Sweden took control of the game with Blackstenius opening the scoring in the 28th minute, followed by a powerful header from Asllani early in the second half.
Lina Hurtig added a third goal in the 77th minute to seal the win and Poland’s elimination from the tournament. Poland came close to scoring late on, hitting the post, but couldn’t break through.
While the result confirmed Poland’s early exit from their first-ever major tournament, Szemik’s individual performance was a bright spot.
She now returns to West Ham with valuable international experience and will look to build on her strong summer showing as preparations for the new season begin.
