Aston Villa have several players with less than two years remaining on their contracts.
Only two players left the club upon the expiry of their deals this summer: Robin Olsen and Kortney Hause.
Philippe Coutinho, meanwhile, mutually agreed to terminate his contract in order to complete a permanent move to Brazilian club Vasco da Gama.
The 33-year-old spent the past year on loan there and may now see out the rest of his career at his boyhood club.
The termination was financially beneficial for Villa, allowing them to remove Coutinho’s wages from their books as they aim to reduce their wage bill in line with UEFA’s squad cost ratio rules.
Next summer, Villa are expected to have four players whose contracts will expire, meaning they are now in the final year of their deals.
Lucas Digne, one of the club’s higher earners, is among them. Ross Barkley’s contract is also reportedly set to expire in 2026.
Alex Moreno and Leander Dendoncker are both available for transfer this summer. However, if they do not secure permanent moves, they will become free agents at the end of next June.
A further eight players in Villa’s squad are under contract until 2027, including captain John McGinn.
The Scot has attracted interest from Everton this summer, but manager Unai Emery is understood to want to keep him at the club.
Tyrone Mings signed an extension until 2027 earlier this summer, which would take him up to his 34th birthday.
Last summer, Emery instructed Monchi and Damian Vidagany not to entertain any offers for Jacob Ramsey. However, Ramsey is now also in the final two years of his contract.
The midfielder has been linked with Newcastle United and West Ham, while Tottenham Hotspur may also revive their interest.
Leon Bailey, whose contract also runs until 2027, is expected to leave the club this summer, as is Emi Buendía, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Bayer Leverkusen.
Matty Cash has also entered the final two years of his deal, having last signed an extension in April 2022.
Midfielders Boubacar Kamara and Youri Tielemans are likewise out of contract in 2027.
Villa offered Kamara a new deal in April and could also reward Tielemans for an excellent 2025/26 campaign, especially as his market value will begin to depreciate after this summer.
Both Kamara and Tielemans joined Villa on free transfers following the expiration of their contracts at Marseille and Leicester City, respectively.
Of the players mentioned above, a few won’t - or are unlikely to - have their contracts extended, but big decisions will need to be made regarding the likes of Digne, McGinn, Tielemans, Cash, and Ramsey, while Villa will also be hoping Kamara commits his future soon.
