Beto could be set to leave Everton this summer.

The Guinea-Bissau forward was heavily linked with an exit in the winter transfer window but David Moyes chose to keep him around.

The 27-year-old notched eight goals in 30 matches in the Premier League and is the most senior striker at the club after Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s departure.

The former Udinese star has attracted significant interest from newly-promoted Leeds United, but they may not be alone in trying to sign him.

Atalanta eye Beto transfer from Everton

The Hill Dickinson Stadium outfit are in the midst of a huge overhaul this summer and could increase their budget by selling Beto.

A report from Corriere della Sera in their print edition (page 1, 9 July) claims that Saudi Arabian clubs are trying to sign Atalanta star Mateo Retegui.

It states that the Serie A outfit could target the Blues star as a £21.5million replacement if the Saudis are successful in signing their forward.

Everton cannot afford to lose Beto

The Toffees have already lost Calvert-Lewin; they cannot afford to lose Beto as well, as they would have no experienced top-flight striker with the season approaching rapidly.

They are close to completing the signature of Villarreal forward Thierno Barry, who notched 11 goals in La Liga last season, but he would be an unproven commodity in the English game.

He should play second fiddle to Beto while he adapts to his new surroundings rather than being thrown into the deep end and forced to start every week.

The Friedkin Group already have an extensive list of areas to address this summer, and having to bring in another attacker, one of starting quality, would be a tough task this late in the summer, when some top players have already made moves.

Therefore, they should reject any offers that come their way for Beto, as they know exactly what he offers, and it would be hard to replace him on such short notice.

The reported fee is not enough to take the risk that comes with allowing him to depart, so he should be kept for the move to the new stadium.
