Ruben Amorim might not be getting his way in the transfer market so far, but that doesn’t mean he can’t work to raise the level of the players at his disposal.
What happens in the transfer window isn’t always in the club’s control, as evidenced by Liam Delap choosing Chelsea despite clear interest from Man Utd.
However, Man Utd fans know that the current squad, even without any additions, is nowhere near the 15th place in the Premier League it conspired to finish last season.
Internal improvement is even more critical than strengthening the squad, and Ruben Amorim has already done something on the first day of the pre-season that he had been desperate for all season in 2024/25.

Ruben Amorim takes Man Utd pre-season by the horns
The “Ruben Amorim pre-season” has almost become a mythical term in the fanbase because of what he did after his first pre-season with Sporting.
He knows he will be judged on improving the players at his disposal as much as the board will be judged on providing him with new players.
To do what he will be judged on, Amorim pleaded all season in 2024/25 that he needed time on the training pitch, which he’ll get this pre-season.
As per Man Utd’s official website, Amorim immediately did what he wanted to do on the first day of pre-season – a tactical instruction session on a full-sized pitch.

The website read: “After the rondos, the session progressed to tactical instruction on the full-sized pitch. This, after all, is what the players and coaching staff have clearly been waiting for: time to work, to learn, and to improve. That was at a serious premium last season with such a packed schedule, but now Ruben has a full pre-season to get his message across with further detail than before.”
Internal improvement will decide Ruben Amorim’s Man Utd fate
Nobody is mistaking Amorim’s job security to be under any threat, but that’s only because the 2024/25 season was a free hit for him.
Armed with a pre-season, even if he doesn’t get many signings, the minimum expectation has to be to see improvement from the players at his disposal.
Another campaign where United lurch from one domestic loss to another while putting in feckless performances will be much harder to defend with a pre-season behind him.
That is according to his own words, since he promised “good days are coming”, and that can’t be anything to do with promises in the window, where the club is not controlling everything.
What he can control, however, is how his team plays and gets results, and that’s where he will be judged.
Regardless of the recruitment, United can’t repeat their performances from the 2024/25 season.
