Leeds United would have to pay £25M to land England U21 star

Daniel Farke has made it no secret that he has wanted an attacking midfielder at Leeds United. Due to circumstances last season, he had to use Brenden Aaronson in the role.

The American had some decent output, scoring nine goals, but his overall play left a lot to be desired. Last season, Farke pushed to sign Sheffield United star Gustavo Hamer. But all the bids failed as the window closed. Leeds eventually won the Championship and were promoted to the Premier League.

A new attacking midfielder is still very much on the shortlist of the club this summer. Leeds could go back in for Hamer, but new Sheffield boss Ruben Selles is adamant that the club will not sell:

“He [Hamer] is a Sheffield United player and I want him to be a Sheffield United player when the market closes,”

Fabrizio Romano has reported that Manchester City have slapped a £20million to £25million transfer fee on James McAtee. The England U21 international was a target for Leeds last summer, but Pep Guardiola decided against loaning him out. After a frustrating season on City’s bench, the youngster is now keen to move away.

His starring performance with the England U21 side in the Euros would have no doubt boosted his profile and value this summer. Bundesliga, Premier League and Serie A clubs are also said to be in the race to sign the 22-year old.

Leeds United keen on new number 10

Multiple reports from within the club suggest that the main targets in the number 10 role would be Gustavo Hamer or Aston Villa’s Emi Buendia. Both players are keen to join, but ultimately it will come down to the transfer fee.

Leeds will also definitely be in the race to sign McAtee this summer, after pursuing him in the summer and winter transfer windows.

James McAtee would be a seamless fit

The Manchester City man is built for that attacking midfield role. Even in limited minutes under Pep Guardiola this season, he managed to score seven goals in all competitions, including the FA Cup and Champions League.

His last loan spell at a Premier League club was in 2023 with Sheffield United. Even in a more defensive team he managed three goals and three assists in the league. If Leeds are able to get him, he will be a serious upgrade on Brenden Aaronson.
