Nottingham Forest and James McAtee transfer as Man City fee emerges

Nottingham Forest linked play-maker James McAtee can leave Manchester City this summer.

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano who says the 22-year-old is available for a fee of ‘£20/25m’.

The midfielder, who was born in Salford and has come through the system at City, is said to be interesting clubs in the Bundesliga, Premier League and Serie A and Romano claims ‘Atalanta are among clubs well informed on his situation’.

Forest have been watching the England Under-21 captain for some time and have scouted him over the past year. They will have been watching with interest as he led Lee Carsley’s squad to a defence of their European title just a few weeks ago.

For all his success at international age group level, McAtee has found it hard to breakthrough at City. In all he has made 34 appearances since making his debut nearly five years ago.

He spent the 2022/23 on loan with Sheffield United in the Championship and returned to Bramall Lane the following season after Paul Heckingbottom guided the Blades to promotion.

McAtee played 30 times in 23/24 but couldn’t stave off relegation back to the second tier. He spent last season at City and played 15 league games but made only three starts.

Forest are looking to bolster their squad this summer, to cope with the combined demands of domestic and European competition and will know McAtee well. He can play wide but is more regularly deployed in an attacking midfield role.

As things stand Forest have Morgan Gibbs-White as the fulcrum of their team, while Elliot Anderson can operate either in the middle of the park or slightly further forward.
