Former Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick has been rushed to hospital for emergency surgery after a routine operation went wrong. The Austria manager went under the knife to fix wear and tear on his ankle withe procedure at a Salzburg clinic having went smoothly.

The German national was discharged soon after his first surgery but complications arose. The wound left in the aftermath became inflamed and infected ensuring that Rangnick was readmitted to hospital.

Medics were able to successfully get the infection under control and Rangnick, 67, is said to be still in hospital but doing well. The coach is expected to return to his home on Friday.

Austrian FA spokesman Thomas Trukesitz insisted: "Ralf Rangnick is doing well. Nobody needs to have any concerns about his health."

Former Stuttgart, Schalke and RB Leipzig coach Rangnick spent six months in charge of United after was sacked in November 2021. After being appointed, Rangnick was expected to finish his spell at the end of the season before transitioning into a consultancy role - ultimately he departed the club instead.

Rangnick famously said the club required open heart surgery to turn around its fortunes during his time in charge at Old Trafford.

"One of the very few good things is that it is crystal clear, it is not that difficult, you don't even need glasses to see what the problems are," he said.

"So now, it's only about how do we solve them, and for me it's clear, it's not enough to do some minor amendments, little issues, here and there, some minor cosmetic things. No, in medicine you would say this is an operation of the open heart.

"If this happens and everyone has realised that this has to happen and if people want to work together then it makes sense and I believe it doesn’t take two or three years to change those things. This can happen within one year."
