Werder Bremen goalkeeper Michael Zetterer is a target for West Ham United this summer.
The 29-year-old has been the first choice for the German club since October 2023, but it’s unclear if he’ll be the No.1.
Werder Bremen have appointed Horst Steffen as their new manager, and he said Mio Backhaus will compete with the German for the starting place next season.
This week’s edition of SportBild then questions whether Zetterer could be on his way out in this window.
That’s because it’s unclear whether Zetterer will be Steffen’s No.1 and West Ham have entered the picture. It’s claimed the Hammers have him on their list and are keen on securing his services.
The Bundesliga club have to raise funds to balance their books and therefore, SportBild state ‘no player is unsellable’. This should please Graham Potter’s side if they intend to make an offer for the goalkeeper.
Wednesday’s edition of Bild relay Steffen’s comments on the West Ham target and Mio Backhaus.
They then state: ‘The message is clear: Currently, Zetterer can’t be sure of keeping his place in goal. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll only be the No. 2 in the future. Steffen wants to get an impression first.’
Werder Bremen head of football Peter Niemeyer hasn’t given any assurances to Zetterer.
“The impressions in training are important. Everyone has the chance to show what they can do. This is especially true for a new coach. Zetti has earned the status of No. 1, and therefore there is a basic trust in him. But behind him, there is a highly talented man in Mio who wants to take the next step,” he said.
Bild aren’t certain whether Zetterer will stay or leave, and the Hammers could capitalise on the situation to try and sign him.
