Everton are looking to strengthen their depth in midfield and the final third, after a slow start to the transfer window on Merseyside.

Jack Harrison is among the long list of players who departed at the end of last season, and the Toffees are now light on the wings and in central midfield.

Everton are set to sign Villarreal striker Thierno Barry, but are yet to otherwise recruit in attack, and they will need to move quickly to prepare their squad for the season.

Manchester City outcast Jack Grealish has been linked with a loan move, but another player from the Etihad Stadium could be an even better recruit.

McAtee can be Everton’s Palmer

Palmer departed City despite impressing in glimpses of action, but exploded at Chelsea and quickly became one of the best players in the Premier League.

Everton could push for a move for McAtee in the hope that he could go through a similar explosion after a move to a club where he would play regularly.

As a left-footed attacking midfielder who can also play on the right wing, McAtee would be a direct upgrade on Harrison, who disappointed in his two seasons at Goodison Park.

With seven goals to his name, McAtee has already outscored Palmer’s total at City in seven fewer matches, and the potential for him to develop and increase his resale value at Everton makes a deal a no-brainer, if they can convince him to join.
