Liverpool Pre-Season Friendly Against Preston to Be Played Sunday

Even under normal circumstances it would feel a touch bizarre that Liverpool’s first pre-season friendly of the summer in preparation for the 2025-26 season was set to see them face off against Preston North End on Sunday.

Even under normal circumstances it would feel for many as though the last season just ended, that surely it was too soon for this. And of course, these are anything but normal circumstances following the tragic death of Diogo Jota.

The Liverpool and Portugal forward passed away just last week in an auto accident as he was returning to the club for pre-season. Now, after being pushed back from Friday to Tuesday due to the tragedy, pre-season has begun.

And on Sunday July 13th, Liverpool will face off against Preston from the Championship side’s Deepdale stadium as scheduled. The match is also set to be broadcast on ITV in England—a decision made long before Jota’s death.

Typically, such an early pre-season match would be limited to club channels, but ITV had decided to give the defend Premier League champions full broadcast coverage for their pre-season return ahead of 2025-26’s title defence.

That the match would be played as scheduled was in some doubt in recent days. Now it seems certain to go ahead. Hopefully, it won’t come too soon for players and club staff who have had little time so far to grieve and process.
