Newcastle United could now have the last laugh over Bryan Mbeumo and Man United after…

Newcastle United tried and failed to sign Bryan Mbeumo, yet he still has not finalised a move to Manchester United.

After initially being Eddie Howe’s top target, Newcastle decided that Bryan Mbeumo was too expensive. His asking price was deemed to be too much, while Newcastle were stunned by Mbeumo’s wage demands.

Newcastle United could not give Mbeumo what he wanted, while a preference to play for Manchester United ended all hope of him swapping Brentford for Tyneside. The Magpies have taken their business elsewhere, with Anthony Elanga set to sign.

All the while, Mbeumo’s move to Manchester United has still not been completed.

Newcastle United could stop Manchester United signing Bryan Mbeumo

Incredibly, Newcastle United could have the chance to completely ruin that transfer.

After striking a deal for Elanga, Newcastle are turning their attention towards signing a striker. Yoane Wissa is an option for Newcastle, with the forward seen as someone for Toon fans to ‘keep an eye on’.

Manchester United will also be keeping an eye on Wissa’s future, as Sky Sports claim that Brentford are unlikely to sell the 28-year-old and Mbeumo this summer.

With only one of them set to depart the Gtech Community Stadium, Newcastle have an opportunity to get the striker they need and have the last laugh when it comes to Mbeumo.

However, Toon officials will have to move fast as Man United continue to push for Mbeumo to arrive at Old Trafford. They could potentially land Newcastle’s top summer target in the Cameroon international and stop Wissa from moving to the North East. That would be doubly disappointing for Eddie Howe.

Newcastle United face competition to sign Yoane Wissa

While there is the added incentive of potentially hindering Manchester United’s transfer plans by signing Wissa, Newcastle do face competition for his signature.

Sky Sports state that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Wissa, having previously discussed bringing Mbeumo to north London.

Spurs are reportedly exploring whether a deal is possible, and they could have an advantage over Newcastle. That is because a move to Spurs would allow Wissa to reunite with Thomas Frank, who was recently appointed as Ange Postecoglou’s replacement.

If Newcastle United are serious about Wissa solving their striker problem then they need to get a move on. The Mbeumo situation complicates matters, while Spurs could get in the way too.

In terms of alternatives, Newcastle have considered Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Ollie Watkins.
