The deadline is upon us. The Kansas City Chiefs and their franchise-tagged right guard Trey Smith have until 3 p.m. Arrowhead Time on Tuesday, July 15 to work out a new deal. Otherwise, Smith — who signed his franchise tag tender on March 10 — will play on the tag this season, earning $23.4 million before becoming a free agent again next spring.
It’s not at all unknown for players and teams to come to an agreement on a new deal days (or hours) before the deadline. But it’s also possible they won't come to terms.
