Bayern Munich 'lays out terms' for Luis Diaz transfer as bid expected

Bayern Munich has reportedly decided that it is not willing to pay any more than €60 million ($70 million), plus add-ons, to sign Luis Diaz from Liverpool this summer.

Diaz's future has been the subject of intense speculation for several weeks, with Bayern and Barcelona — as well as clubs in Saudi Arabia — linked with a move for the Colombia international.

Bayern Insider reports that Bayern has taken a step back with its pursuit of Diaz in a show of respect to the Anfield club following last week's tragic passing of Diogo Jota, but the German club does want to sign the 28-year-old before the summer window closes.

The general consensus is that Diaz's dream would be to join Barcelona, but Bayern is in a stronger position to do a deal, considering the Catalan club's financial predicament.

Barcelona in the market for a left-sided forward to ease the attacking burden on the Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski.

It had looked as though Barcelona would sign Nico Williams from Athletic Club, but for a second summer in a row, it failed to get a deal over the line for the Spain international. Williams signed a new 10-year contract at Athletic Club last week, sending Barca back to the drawing board with its list of targets.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco spoke glowingly of Diaz toward the end of the 2024-25 season, while Marcus Rashford of Manchester United is also an option.

Bayern is also interested in a new winger following the departure of Leroy Sane, who signed for Galatasaray as a free agent last month.

Diaz was due to return to Liverpool training this week, although it is not clear exactly what day, and ahead of his return to the club, he was asked by Colombian influencer La Liendra about his future plans.

“We’re there, negotiating," Diaz said. "We’ll see what can be achieved, for us and for the club. We’ll try to do our best and make the best decision.

“We’re in the process of negotiations, talking with the club, with Liverpool, with everyone who’s approaching us. But I’m very calm where I am, you know, very happy. Trying to make the best decision, now."

Diaz is contracted to Liverpool until 2027, but he remains on the same terms that he signed upon joining the club from Porto in 2022, meaning that he is significantly underpaid relative to his importance to Arne Slot's squad.

According to Capology, Diaz currently earns £55,000 ($73,000) per week, which is far lower than his teammates of a similar standing.

Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa are all reported to earn more than double the amount that Diaz takes home, and Diaz could be forgiven for finding that galling given Chiesa barely played last season and the Colombian scored more goals than Gakpo and Nunez.

Liverpool has reportedly attempted to address Diaz's contract situation but little progress has been made, but rather than sell him this summer — unless a massive offer comes in — the Reds would prefer to maximize Diaz's performance value over the next two years and allow him to leave for nothing following in 2027.
