Chelsea are considering a move to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez after Man United’s efforts to sign him hit a new stumbling block.

That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that United have opened the door for rivals after struggling to sell Andre Onana.

Enzo Maresca is keen to strengthen in goal should the right deal present itself this summer, while the 32-year-old Argentina international is keen to leave Villa Park.

Brown told Football Insider in May that Martinez’s camp are pushing to leave Aston Villa after he changed agents in a bid to force through a move.

Chelsea are believed to have been put on alert by his availability and could now leap ahead of the likes of Man United in their pursuit.

This comes after Football Insider revealed on 23 June Man United plan to sign a new goalkeeper if they can cash in on Onana as they continue to eye a number of targets.

Chelsea plot Emiliano Martinez swoop after source’s reveal

Brown told Football Insider in February that Chelsea plan to sign a new goalkeeper as Maresca is keen to upgrade on his current options.

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted the Blues are in a good position to beat man United to Martinez’s signing.

“Man United can’t afford to sign Martinez while they still have Onana,” he told Football Insider.

“So that has limited their options massively because it looks like they’re struggling to sell.

“Martinez is a very good goalkeeper, and from what I hear there are a few clubs who have been made aware that he will be available this summer.

“One of those clubs is Chelsea, who have been looking to strengthen in that position.

“It’s different at Chelsea to Man United, because they’ve got about four goalkeepers but they can go and sign Martinez and worry about what to do with the rest afterwards.

“As things stand, I’d say they’re in a good position to get ahead of United for that deal.

“The door has been left open so it wouldn’t surprise me to see them make a move.

“United are very much in danger of missing the boat over this one. They’ve held talks but a Chelsea hijack is looking likely.”

Nicolas Jackson update emerges at Stamford Bridge

While speculation continues about potential new signings at Stamford Bridge, a number of players are also being linked with moves away this summer.

Football Insider exclusively revealed on 30 June that Aston Villa want to sign Nicolas Jackson have held preliminary talks with Chelsea about the deal.

Unai Emery is pushing for the capture of the 24-year-old as he looks to overhaul his attacking options at Villa Park this summer.

However, Football Insider revealed on 7 July that Chelsea are planning to keep Jackson beyond the transfer window despite having signed Joao Pedro and Liam Delap.
