Manchester United Need To ‘Clear Space’ Before Targeting Options Including Former Premier League Strikers

Following a disastrous Premier League campaign, Manchester United’s search for reinforcements continues. Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon make up the Red Devils’ two arrivals thus far. With both Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund struggling, could a striker be another target?

Several Possible Striker Options Identified by Manchester United

Possible Targets For The Upcoming Season

As reported by Laurie Whitwell and Mark Critchley, Ruben Amorim’s side has to remove players from the squad before targeting a forward.

The North West outfit has already seen offers for the chance to secure Premier League strikers from last season, such as Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Jamie Vardy and Callum Wilson. This would provide a more cost-effective option, and someone that the younger forwards can learn from.

In addition to this, former Everton Striker Moise Kean also remains an option. The Italian’s €52m release clause is still active until this time next week, amid the Red Devils keeping tabs on him.

However, as mentioned previously, external factors will have to give way for these options to advance. The free-agent options are more likely to be targets towards the end of the window if they do not get any of their top options.

How Does This Affect Manchester United

New forwards clearly remain a focus, as suggested by the arrival of Cunha and the focus on Bryan Mbuemo. This comes as no surprise given the lack of threat in front of goal last season. Furthermore, the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Alejandro Garnacho are all expected to leave after internal fallouts.

Free Agent options offer experience and could also take minutes from the other young options, if they are struggling. Zirkzee, Hojlund and Chido Obi Martin are all under the age of 24 and managed a combined tally of just seven goals last season.

Despite this, many other factors could also affect how useful these attackers would be. For example, Vardy is ageing and may not be the threat he once was. Similarly, both Calvert Lewin and Wilson have struggled with injuries for the last few seasons. If these players are also asking for high wages, then the deal may not be worth it.
