Following his announcement by Palmeiras, Ramón Sosa has opened up on the reasons behind his departure from Nottingham Forest, less than a year after joining the Premier League side.
The Paraguayan winger completed a move to Palmeiras this week, marking an early return to South America following a short and uneven spell in England.
According to Brazilian newspaper Trivela, Forest initially saw Sosa as a smart market opportunity. After impressing at Talleres with 13 goal involvements in 21 matches, he was signed for €12m in August 2024 to fulfil a specific tactical role.
The club’s recruitment plan at the time called for a right-footed winger with pace and verticality, and Sosa fit the bill.
Despite showing good form in training and earning praise from manager Nuno Espírito Santo, Sosa couldn’t fully replicate his Argentine form on the pitch. He featured in 23 games for Forest, scoring three goals and assisting once.
Most of his bright moments came in domestic cup matches, where he started four times and contributed two goals and an assist.
Still, the lack of regular Premier League minutes became a turning point. Trivela reports that the coaching staff acknowledged his effort and flashes of quality, but ultimately felt he couldn’t translate his training performances into consistent match impact.
Age was also a factor. “European clubs no longer have much patience with players already aged 25,” a source said. Sosa turns 26 in late August.
Speaking to Versus Paraguay after arriving in Brazil, Sosa was candid about his exit: “It wasn’t useful for me to stay there without playing. I’m part of the national team and I couldn’t get minutes.”
He added: “My intention was to find a club where I could play, stay active, to arrive well at the [Paraguayan] National Team. I had offers from European clubs, but at this moment, it was the best option for me, for my career.”
While the move to Palmeiras gives Sosa a fresh start, the winger made it clear that consistent minutes and his place with Paraguay were the priorities behind his early departure from English football. What comes next remains to be seen.
