Former Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti sentenced to one year in prison

Carlo Ancelotti has been sentenced to one year in prison and fined €386,361 for failing to pay tax on his image rights revenue in the financial year of 2014.

There was a similar offence in the 2015 tax year, but the Madrid court who sentenced Ancelotti was unable to prove his tax liabilities due to no proof of being in Madrid for long enough.

According to a report from The Athletic, Ancelotti moved to London after being sacked by Real Madrid.

As per the same report, it is unlike Spain to enforce prison sentences of under two years for first time offenders or non-violent offenders. Carlo Ancelotti falls under both of those brackets.

At the time of Carlo Ancelotti's sentencing, he is the manager of the Brazil national team. It is the first post that Ancelotti picked up after leaving his second Real Madrid stint.

During the tax year of 2014, Carlo Ancelotti was employed by Real Madrid in his first era as manager.

This was Ancelotti's first time managing Real Madrid, whereby he lasted three years between 2013-2015. Carlo Ancelotti then returned to Real Madrid in 2021, staying until the summer of 2025.

This summer, Carlo Ancelotti left the club amicably, saying after leaving: “I can’t be Real Madrid coach my whole life. Maybe the club needs a new impulse. [Going] is normal, there’s no need to make a drama of it.”

Real Madrid is yet to comment on the situation.
