NFL Writer Places Russell Wilson on NY Giants’ Hot Seat

Heading into his first training camp with the New York Giants, Russell Wilson hasn't gained much support at a national level.

Many analysts and writers are under the belief that it will only be a matter of time until the Giants decide to roll with Jaxson Dart over Wilson.

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio is in the same boat. Listing out each quarterback who might be on the hot seat in 2025, Florio unsurprisingly listed Wilson, suggesting that if Dart seems ready to take the field early, the Giants shouldn't hesitate to make the change.

"If [Russell Wilson is] the Week 1 starter (if Jaxson Dart lives up to his first-round draft stock, Wilson shouldn't be), the clock will be ticking. Immediately," Florio wrote.

"In 2004, the Giants benched Kurt Warner after nine games for Eli Manning, even though the Giants were 5-4 at the time. When Dart is ready, Dart will play. Even if Wilson makes it through 2025 without getting benched, he'll have to do plenty to keep Dart on the sideline for 2026."

With Wilson being on a one-year deal with the Giants, it seems unlikely he'll get the chance to start in 2026. The 2025 campaign would have to go really well in order for New York to keep its first-round pick on ice for two straight seasons.

Wilson finds himself in an unfortunate reality. While he's gained support from teammates and coaches as the starter, the moment the Giants selected Jaxson Dart out of Ole Miss in the first round, it placed the veteran quarterback on the hot seat.

It doesn't help that Wilson's post-Seattle playing days have been underwhelming. After spending time with the Denver Broncos and the Pittsburgh Steelers, many believe that Wilson's best days are far behind him. This opportunity with the Giants will either be a shot at redemption-or the true sign that Wilson's days as an NFL starter are over.

During the 2024 season, Wilson achieved a 6-5 record with the Steelers. He completed 64 percent of his passes for 2,482 yards. The veteran tossed 16 touchdowns and threw five interceptions. During the lone playoff game he played with the Steelers, Wilson threw for 270 yards and two touchdowns. Despite posting his best passer rating in a playoff setting, Wilson's Steelers were one-and-done.
