West Brom are plotting a move for former Crystal Palace man Jeffrey Schlupp on a free transfer, sources have told Football Insider.

Schlupp, 32, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Celtic, is a free agent after leaving Crystal Palace last month upon the expiration of his contract.

West Brom are planning to rebuild their squad under new manager Ryan Mason, and he sees the former Eagles man’s experience and versatility as a key addition to his squad at The Hawthorns.

Schlupp made 18 appearances for Celtic last term, helping Brendan Rodgers’ men retain their Scottish Premiership title.

West Brom plot Schlupp move as Mason eyes rebuild

West Brom endured a turbulent Championship campaign last term, which witnessed the departures of two permanent managers in Carlos Corberan and Tony Mowbray.

The Baggies finished four points adrift of the playoff places last season, while Mason is now tasked with steering the Black Country side to a top-six spot.

Amid their efforts to secure a playoff place, West Brom have already signed Nat Phillips from Liverpool, as well as the former Norway Under-21 striker Aune Selland Heggebo.

Schlupp’s potential arrival would come as yet another statement of intent from Mason, who is vying to steer the Hawthorns outfit back towards the Premier League.

Schlupp set to thrive in the Championship

Football Insider verdict

Mason faces a tough job on his hands as he looks to guide the Baggies back to the playoffs for the first time since they finished fifth in the Championship under well-regarded boss Corberan at the end of a largely successful 2023/24 season.

But Schlupp’s signature would help the former Tottenham interim manager in that quest, thanks to his rich versatility and experience.

Until last season, Schlupp was a regular feature in the Premier League for Crystal Palace, and made over 240 appearances for the South London club from Leicester City in 2017.

The 32-year-old was part of the legendary Foxes team that won the top-flight title in 2016, while he also helped the East Midlands club win the Championship title back in 2014.

Schlupp’s exploits in the Scottish Premiership for Celtic show that the midfielder, who can also operate as a fullback, should thrive in the Championship next term.

Meanwhile, West Brom News have exclusively revealed that Flamengo gave up on their pursuit of Baggies star Mikey Johnston due to fan backlash.
