He arrived in late 2021 following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking and was originally due to transition into a consultancy role.
However, he left the club at the end of the season instead, with Erik ten Hag opting to coach without Rangnick’s assistance and insight.
Rangnick won 11 and lost eight of his 29 matches in charge and was regularly critical of various aspects of the club.
He memorably stated that United needed “open heart surgery” to fix deep-rooted issues.
Since then, Rangnick has rebuilt his managerial credentials on the international stage.
He took charge of Austria and successfully guided them to EURO 2024.
However, as via The Mirror’s report, the 67-year-old has now been rushed to hospital for emergency surgery after complications from a routine ankle operation.
The initial procedure was performed at a clinic in Salzburg to treat general wear and tear.

Rangnick was discharged shortly after, but an infection developed at the site of the wound.
Thus, requiring urgent medical attention.
Doctors were able to bring the infection under control, and while Rangnick remains in hospital, he is said to be recovering well.
An Austrian Football Association spokesperson, Thomas Trukesitz, confirmed: “Ralf Rangnick is doing well.
“Nobody needs to have any concerns about his health.”
Rangnick is expected to return home on Friday and resume preparations for Austria’s campaign in Germany this summer.
His next responsibilities with Austria come in September when they face Cyprus and Bosnia & Herzegovina in World Cup qualifiers.
Austria won two matches from two so far on the road to the 2026 World Cup.
Rangnick, who has been widely applauded with transforming Austrian football after 21 wins in 37 games, will be desperate to sustain his progress as his side look to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1998.
