The Miami Dolphins are just one year removed from the best passing attack in the National Football League. Although a feared Dolphins team feels like a relic of the past, there is reason to believe this iteration of the Phins could be the best one yet. Part of the optimism stems from the signing of sixth year receiver Nick Westbrook-Ikhine this March.

Westbrook-Ikhine spent his first four years in the league with the Tennessee Titans. At six-foot-two, offensive coordinator Frank Smith says the newcomer brings a different element to the Dolphins passing attack.

“He’s going to be extremely reliable,” Smith said. “I think ultimately if you talk to the guys that knew him in Tennessee and our exposure so far has been consistent work ethic. I think that’s ultimately where he puts himself in position to be successful is because he really is a student of the process, making sure he’s on the little things so, therefore, on Sundays he can be reliable for the quarterback and really the rest of the offense.”

Nick Westbrook-Ikhine Speaks On New Role

At 28-years-old, Westbrook-Ikhine says he is still doing a lot of growing. He is learning how to step into a leadership role, while also attempting to be a positive force in the Dolphins culture change.

The receiver is also dealing with an undisclosed injury, that by his own admission has the receiver struggling to feel confident in his ability. None-the-less, he thinks his size is going to help him chisel out a role in South Beach.

“Big body,” Westbrook-Ikhine, said of his 6’2″ frame, as reported by the Miami Herald. “Use what God gave me there and then just being that guy to take advantage of the opportunities on the field that present themselves, whether it’s mismatches and whatnot. You have a lot of weapons around me and finding open areas, being physical. I’m excited to see all the different ways that he plans on game planning, scheming stuff up because I know he’s got some great ideas.”

One aspect in particular Westbrook-Ikhine see’s his presence being felt is in the red zone. The Phins red zone attack took a big hit in in 2024, with their touchdown percentage dropping nearly ten percent from the year prior.

“I love the red zone,” Westbrook-Ikhine said. “I’m a bigger target, which makes it a little bit easier too. You can kind of throw it wherever. I enjoy being in the end zone.”

Dealing With Undisclosed Injury

There is very minimal information available regarding the injury. There is nothing officially reported, fans were only made aware of the issue last month at mandatory mini camp.

The location of the injury is completely undisclosed at this time, and that could remain the case throughout the entire summer as teams are not officially required to report injuries during the offseason.

The news broke June 11th in an X post by Joe Schad.

“Nick Westbrook-Ikhine says it’s been an adjustment to the Dolphins’ offense,” Schad’s post read. “He’s also been working through an injury and feels ready to push himself. He’s still working through carving out a role and thinks it will happen at training camp.”
