Proposed Newcastle United transfer collapses as talks break down

NEWCASTLE UNITED are digging in their heels over Sean Longstaff – and have rejected Leeds United’s latest offer for the midfielder.

Leeds have made three offers for Longstaff this summer, with the latest having been lodged at the start of this week.

The Elland Road club are understood to have offered an up-front payment of £10m, with a further £2m of potential add-ons taking the total value of the deal to £12m.

However, Newcastle have rejected that package for the 27-year-old, who recently entered the final 12 months of his contract at St James’ Park.

Leeds officials must now decide whether to return to the negotiating table or pursue alternative options as they look to strengthen their midfield ahead of their return to the Premier League.

Hoffenheim’s Anton Stach has been touted as a possible target in Germany, with Leeds already having seen summer moves for Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki fail, with the duo both having joined Sunderland.

Longstaff is understood to be keen on a move to Elland Road as he looks to resurrect a career that stalled badly last season.

The North Shields native did not make a single Premier League start in the second half of the campaign, and ended the season having made just 12 starts in all competitions.

He has reportedly agreed personal terms with Leeds, but there is no chance of transfer talks progressing unless Newcastle accept an offer.

The Magpies should confirm their first signing of the summer in the next 24 hours, with Anthony Elanga having completed a medical earlier today ahead of completing a £52m switch from Nottingham Forest.
