Pelicans lead assistant to stay in New Orleans over joining New York Knicks

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Pelicans lead assistant coach James Borrego will reportedly stay in New Orleans over joining Mike Brown’s new Knicks staff, according to SportsNet New York.

Borrego previously interviewed for the Knicks’ head coach opening before Brown was hired, and was still considered a candidate for lead assistant.

As the Pelicans’ lead assistant, Borrego is a highly valued member of Willie Green’s staff. With Green as a defensive-minded head coach, Borrego is considered the top offensive-minded Pelicans staffer.

This current tenure with the Pelicans is the second stop in New Orleans for Borrego, 47. He was a lead assistant for Monty Williams from 2010-12.

From 2018 to 2022, Borrego was head coach of the Charlotte Hornets.
