'So bad': Danny Murphy says what many Newcastle United fans are thinking as Dominic…

· 9 July 2025, 18:30

**Dominic Calvert-Lewin made the call to leave Everton this summer, letting his contract with the Toffees expire and sparking even more intense rumours that his next destination will be Newcastle United.**

Barely a transfer window has gone by since Eddie Howe took the helm at Newcastle, where the Magpies have not been linked with Dominic Calvert-Lewin. So far, we've managed to avoid signing the former England international, but now that he's without a club, we're getting more and more worried that he is who we will end up with as a replacement for Callum Wilson.

The 28-year-old reportedly has many suitors, so there is still a strong chance he ends up elsewhere, but the mere fact that the rumour will not go away is a huge cause for concern.

It actually got to a point where we were wondering if we were perhaps being too harsh on the lad, but then Danny Murphy piped up on TalkSPORT when Jim White asked him about the rumours, and he actually hit the nail right on the head.

It's a strange day when you find yourself agreeing with Danny Murphy

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Danny Murphy said exactly what we've been saying, adding that he is surprised Newcastle are even linked with him.

> "It gives them backup for \[Alexander\] Isak. The problem with Calvert-Lewin, of course, is fitness, a bit like Callum Wilson.

>

> "I'm surprised at it, because his record of injury is so bad. They're kinda replacing like for like. I'd argue that Callum Wilson is more of a goal threat and more all-round than Calvert-Lewin; he's more likely to get you goals if he's fit. I'm surprised at it, but maybe it's where they are with the finances, but you'd think they'd want somebody more reliable."

Simon Jordan doesn't see the sense in the Newcastle links to Dominic Calvert-Lewin

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, just to hammer home the point, Simon Jordan added that he's not a fan of Calvert-Lewin's and doesn't understand the thinking behind it.

So, it's not just us being harsh, then. Even journalists and pundits can't see the logic in Newcastle making a move for Calvert-Lewin. And that's without anyone mentioning his wage demands.

As a deadline day desperate deal, if we've not brought in a striker, we could maybe live with it because he's got to be better than nothing, right? Right?
