Midfielder Sean Longstaff could be on his way out of the club in the summer transfer window, as promoted Leeds United submit a bid for the homegrown player - but some fans in the Chronicle Live comments section say that Newcastle should keep a hold of Longstaff, even if his sale represents 'pure profit' to put towards other business.
Leeds' offer is for £10 million plus £2 million in add-ons, and Chronicle Live reports that the Magpies won't stand in his way if Longstaff wants the move.
Leeds are after reinforcements to help them stay in the Premier League, and Longstaff offers plenty of experience at this level despite falling down the pecking order in recent times.
Longstaff's sale would represent 'pure profit', having been with the club since he was eight years old - other homegrown Premier League players have been sold on that basis in recent years too, as clubs learn to find the best ways to overcome PSR restrictions on their spending.
This would help to offset the £55 million that Newcastle plan to spend on the Anthony Elanga transfer, and enable moves elsewhere.
But some fans say that there's still a place for Longstaff on Tyneside. Reader JoeHarvey1 says: "We have a lot on our plate next season.
"The increase in games especially with the new Champions League format will lead to more injuries. So there is a big role for Longstaff at Newcastle. I wish we were keeping him."
Commenter Yorkg writes: "It's the wrong midfielder to let go. Willock would be my choice. Injury prone, loses the ball too much. Longstaff fits the criteria for the Champions League rules."
Others reckon that that North Shields lad is not being rated highly enough for a sale. 1snowbear says: "At 12M he’s a steal, if I was in charge of transfers at NUFC his price tag would be minimum £20M plus. In my opinion I think we should try to keep him, will help with Champions League squad rules."
Mark82nd agrees: "12m is too cheap. Mid 20's, English, Champions League experience and goals, 100+ prem games. 2 seasons ago he got 8/9 goals from midfield. Rarely injured. All that has got to put him in 20m bracket. We're selling him on the cheap."
Toon77 adds: "Where else are we going to get a English (Geordie as well) midfielder with plenty of experience, that Eddie rates highly and does what is asked of him every time he is picked, for £12m and similar wages?"
Itsacomic writes: "If he goes then I wish him well. If he stays then great. Reliable if not spectacular, and always puts in a shift and makes teammates perform better.
"Reminds me a lot of Lee Clark. Not spectacular, or a goalscorer but always there for the team. Good luck Sean whatever you do, and you will always be welcomed back as one of our own if you do join a rival."
Binman61 says: "If he decides to go I wish him well. And at 12m Leeds are getting a bargain. All the best Sean and thanks."
