Commanders add ‘Super Bowl Era’ throwback jerseys to uniform rotation

Quarterback Jayden Daniels and the Commanders will rock new threads this season that call back to the franchise’s winning history. The team unveiled “Super Bowl Era” throwback uniforms on Wednesday.

The new white jerseys and burgundy pants match the uniforms worn by the franchise when it was known as the Redskins throughout their three Super Bowl triumphs.

“We are excited to celebrate Washington’s incredible history with these iconic, Super Bowl Era uniforms this season,” Commanders President Mark Clouse said in a statement. “Ever since Josh Harris and our ownership group acquired the team back in 2023, they’ve placed great value in finding ways to connect the past and present and honor those that made the burgundy and gold what it is today.”

The white jerseys feature burgundy numbers with red and gold stripes on the sleeves. The pants feature yellow and white piping. The socks have the same striping scheme.

The helmets feature the same gold and white stripe down the center with yellow face masks that fans have been clamoring for. Even the font on the nameplates matches the old uniforms.

The new look does not feature the old Redskins logo featuring an American Indian. Instead, the helmets feature the modern W logo introduced in 2022.

“History doesn’t fade,” the team wrote on social media. “It fuels the future.”

The Commanders will don the new alternate uniforms for three home games: the Nov. 2 matchup with the Seattle Seahawks, the Nov. 30 tilt with the Denver Broncos and the Christmas Day game against the rival Dallas Cowboys.

Each game with the new jerseys is set for a national TV audience.

“These uniforms recognize the most successful era of our franchise — one that reflects a culture of excellence and encompasses many historical moments and special memories amongst our fan base,” Mr. Clouse said. “Our coaches, players and the entire organization could not be more excited to celebrate our team’s legacy while creating new memories in these uniforms this season.”

Fans can buy the jerseys beginning in early September.

The immediate reaction to the jersey refresh was overwhelmingly positive from longtime fans, former players and others around the NFL landscape.

“Make ’em permanent,” three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt wrote on X.

“Bro this new regime DOES NOT MISS!!! I’d love this to be our main unis,” wrote Eric Montez, a superfan known for attending games dressed as a burgundy and gold Star Wars Mandalorian.

Rumors have circulated that the Commanders could ditch their current white jerseys and wear the alternate throwbacks full-time in 2026.

That would make former Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III happy.

“Fans love them and never wanted them gone in the first place,” he wrote on X. “Clean, crisp and beautiful.”

The current away uniforms were heavily maligned from the moment they were unveiled in 2022. The gradient numbers and black-striped sleeves never caught on with fans.

“They were pretty much universally despised,” said Samu Qureshi, a Commanders fan who owns a $6 million private collection of team memorabilia and artifacts. “This one is a home run. I can’t see how any fans would have a problem with it: old fans, young fans.”

Possible next steps? Making those throwbacks permanent and rolling out a burgundy version that harkens back to the glory days.

Some fans, including Qureshi, hope to see the franchise embrace the American Indian imagery that accompanied Redskins uniforms from 1933 through 2019.

While the ownership group has stopped censoring the old name and logo on social media highlights, there has been no indication that the team would return to the Redskins iconography.

There might not be a feathered R or spear on the new helmets, but Washington fans are still largely thrilled by the fresh look.

“I think these guys are going to do the right thing,” Qureshi said. “They’re not going to make whimsical decisions. They will consult with people, not just have one person say, ‘Oh, I like this one.’ They are very much taking the fans into consideration with every decision they make.”
