Police in Minnesota are investigating how Minnesota Vikings second-year linebacker Dallas Turner was defrauded of $240,000 in an elaborate banking scam that could involve multiple people.
According to an affidavit obtained by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Turner and his lawyer reached out to police in April after a person contacted Turner, claiming to be a JP Morgan Chase banker. The unidentified caller told Turner that someone was trying to impersonate Turner at a Chase bank in Arizona, trying to start a wire transfer.
The caller then told Turner to put his money into two accounts to stop the person from making the wire transfer. Turner went to a Chase bank in Eagan, Minnesota, and transferred $120,000 to each of the accounts.
Walsh said that nearly $2,500 has been recovered. Walsh also reported that police believe there are several suspects and that they are investigating whether the scheme was an inside job.
“Police have asked JPMorgan Chase whether its internal investigation has determined how ‘the fraudster was able to obtain sensitive account details including Dallas’ full name, linked phone numbers and [his] LLC account info’ and whether any bank employees played a role in the scheme,” the Minnesota Star Tribune’s Paul Walsh wrote.
The Vikings took Turner, an edge rusher who attended the University of Alabama, with the 17th overall selection in the 2024 draft. In his rookie season, Turner had three sacks, 20 tackles, an interception, and five quarterback hits. According to Over The Cap, Turner earned $2,866,702 in his rookie season, with $750,000 being his base salary and $2,072,702 being a prorated signing bonus. He is scheduled to make $3,583,378 in 2025.
