Celtics to play conference rival in group stage of 2025 NBA Cup

The drawing for the 2025 NBA Cup group stage is complete and the teams playing each other early in the tournament are set.

The NBA announced on Wednesday the finalized groups for the tournament that will be capped off with the title game on Dec. 16 in Las Vegas.

All 30 NBA teams were randomly drawn into groups of five within their conference based on win-loss records from the 2024-25 regular season.

The groups for this year’s tournament are listed below.

The Celtics will play a handful of young teams in its group (Pistons, Magic, Nets) in addition to playing one of its rivals, the Philadelphia 76ers.

The NBA Cup is an annual NBA tournament that occurs during the regular season. The tournament was officially announced on July 8, 2023, and it debuted during the 2023–24 NBA season. The first edition of the event was called the In-Season Tournament.

The games have a different feel in comparison to regular season games. The court is designed differently and, during the group stage, point differential in wins and losses play an important part in deciding which team moves on, which is something Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla has given his approval of in the past.

The winning team receives the trophy, also called the NBA Cup, and each winning player receives a cash prize, which was $500,000 for the 2023 edition. The first winner of the NBA Cup was the Los Angeles Lakers. The Milwaukee Bucks defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2024 edition of the championship.
