NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders has dozens of memorable moments during his illustrious career in football from winning Super Bowls to molding Travis Hunter into a Heisman Trophy winner.
One of those moments came on Sept. 2, 2023, when Sanders led Hunter, his son Shedeur and Colorado to an 45-42 upset over TCU at Amon G. Carter Stadium.
While that moment was the first sign of a disappointing season for the Horned Frogs, it provided immediate legitimacy to Sanders, who was coaching in his first game at the FBS level after leaving Jackson State.
“It was everything, it was like the genesis of my coaching career in major college football,” Sanders said Wednesday at Big 12 Football Media Days. “It was the genesis of you seeing Travis and Shedeur, some of the players we featured in our program, it was phenomenal.”
Sanders and the Buffaloes are slated for a return trip to Fort Worth on Oct. 4 and it’s a matchup that holds a lot of significance for Sanders.
Not only because of that career-defining win over the Horned Frogs, but also because of Sanders’ deep ties to the DFW region from his time as a member of the Dallas Cowboys.
“I’m excited about coming back, this is my second home,” Sanders said. “I absolutely love it, I can’t wait to come back. We have two games in Texas which is phenomenal and allows us to recruit tremendously, so I’m happy about that.”
Sanders also shared he had a recent moment with Sonny Dykes and praised the TCU head coach.
“They have a wonderful head coach,” Sanders said. “I’m thankful for him. I was at Pappadeaux across town one day and his whole staff rolled up in there and he showed love. I’m thankful for that.”
In 2024, Sanders led Colorado to its best season since 2016 with a 9-4 finish and an appearance in the Valero Alamo Bowl.
The Buffaloes must replace Hunter, Sanders and other stars from that team, but with another deep transfer portal class Colorado should be a formidable challenge for TCU once again.
