Idrissa Gana Gueye could be sold by Everton despite his recent contract extension.

The veteran midfielder played a crucial role for the Toffees last term, as he missed just one Premier League game across the entire campaign.

The 35-year-old has been a central figure in the turnaround overseen by David Moyes, and his tally of 35 starts last term is unprecedented for a player of his age.

Gueye has recently signed a new one-year contract at Everton, which serves as a hard-earned reward for his efforts.

Gueye’s new contract will allow Everton to sell him next summer

Gueye’s Everton future has been the source of much speculation this summer, but the news that the Toffees have been able to tie him down to a new deal will certainly be welcome.

MORE TOFFEES STORIES

The Merseysiders have already seen some high-profile departures this summer, with the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Abdoulaye Doucoure stepping away as free agents.

Gueye’s contract extension is undoubtedly positive news for Moyes next season, but it could also open the door for the Toffees to cash in on him next year.

Ex-Goodison scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Goodison News – believes that the new contract will present Everton with the opportunity to recoup some of the money that they are set to spend on the midfielder’s wages for the foreseeable future.

“He (Gueye) will be on £100,000-a-week, that’s for sure,” King said.

“I imagine he was on around £70-80,000-per-week previously, and that will go up now. It’s an awful lot of money. However, Gueye has been a loyal servant to Everton, and he’s a tough midfielder.

“A one-year deal with an option for another year makes sense to me. Then, of course, Everton could be in a position to sell him to Saudi Arabia and recoup their money.”

Gueye’s new contract is great news for Everton

Moyes is expected to add plenty of new faces this summer as he looks to continue the upward trajectory from last term, but Gueye could be set to play an even more crucial role than before.

The Toffees have already seen several senior players depart upon the expiry of their contracts, and Gueye’s presence could be invaluable to help any new additions settle in and understand what it means to play for the club.

He will also likely still have a significant role to play on the pitch for Moyes’ charges, and that could see him stand as one of the most important pieces of business of the summer at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
