Manchester United are setting their sights high, as the historic club hopes to host one of the upcoming World Cups.

The Red Devils are currently going through the process of not only upgrading their iconic stadium, Old Trafford, but replacing it with a 100,000 seater stadium at the heart of a thriving innovation hub, tentatively called the Old Trafford Stadium district.

To lead the build of this “new” Old Trafford, the Old Trafford Regeneration Project has recently found a leader in Lord Seb Coe, who brings his experience from the London 2012 Olympic bid to the development.

The new build is set to cost the club around £2 billion, however is fitting into the wider Greater Manchester Strategy with the aim of making Manchester the greatest “second city” in the world by 2050.

It’s understood that the development has hit a logistical barrier lately however, with the Freightliner Terminal behind the Stretford End needed to be bought by United to progress with the build.

However, landowners are holding firm on their valuation, with many believing the firm are looking to cash-in on the vital nature of acquiring the land.

As such, if an agreement can’t be made, as “Chair-Designate” of the Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) for the Old Trafford Regeneration Project, Lord Seb Coe with have significant pull over a potential deal, forcing a compulsory purchase order.

With this option in the club’s back pocket, the development is still on track for completion for the start of the 2030/31 season.

Lord Coe is also keen to ensure the stadium is build in time, voicing his long-term plans for the ground.

Manchester United reported the unveiling of Lord Coe in command on their official website, with the Olympic legend commenting: “I see a chance to bring the FIFA Women’s World Cup to a new Old Trafford Stadium in 2035. The home nations are the sole bidder, which presents a rare opportunity to bid to host the global football family.”

It was already known that United were hoping to use their new stadium to host fixtures at the 2035 Women’s World Cup, however stepping up to host the final would be an incredible occasion to show off the development to the world.
